Competition!

2 January 2012 by Ben Kane 117 Comments

OK, it’s time for the big Spartacus competition to start:

Up for grabs:

2 x signed hardback first editions of Spartacus: The Gladiator;

5 x large format signed paperbacks of Spartacus;

5 x signed paperbacks of Hannibal: Enemy of Rome;

1 x silver Roman coin, from 47 B.C. (value in excess of £60/$90);

1 x steel Roman gladius letter opener; 1 x Roman mug with “Veni, Vidi, Vici” inscription.

Question: What was the name of Spartacus’ co-escapee from the ludus, a man who became his MAIN rival?
Answers (ONE per person) have to be posted on the website, received by email, Facebook or Twitter by midnight UK time on Sunday 15th January.

The prizes will be allocated as follows:
The first name out of the hat gets 1 Spartacus hardback and the coin.

The second name gets 1 Spartacus hardback and the mug.

The third to seventh names each get 1 large format Spartacus paperback.

The eighth name gets 1 Hannibal paperback and the letter opener.

The ninth to twelfth names each get 1 Hannibal paperback.

Ben’s decision on all prizes is final, and the prizes are non-negotiable. You can enter from anywhere in the world – I’ll pay the postage too!

GOOD LUCK!

    Hi Ben!

    Just wondering….I saw on your events page you planned to be going to the White Horse bookshop in Marlborough but now its off your events list….? I take it this means this one has been cancelled?

    Very much looking forward to new book!!!!!

    Cheers,

    Neal.

    @neal: Yes, sadly the event has been cancelled because the venue that the shop uses has closed down. The shop isn’t large enough to do an event, so they’re a bit scuppered. They’re looking for a new venue currently, and have kindly suggested that I do an event there in the summer. Sorry about that, but hopefully you can come to the one in a few months.
    Glad you’re looking forward to Spartacus! Only 6 days to go now…

    The answer to the competition is Crixus. I guess this is not the correct place to post the answer but I am unable to find anywhere else.
    Anyway…On page 584 of The Silver Eagle, Romulus shouts, “Yes! I’m in the twenty-eighth legion.” But Fabiola cannot hear the last three words. (That was a real shame.) Since reading that I have wondered what he would have shouted in Latin. Perhaps you know some Latin, or know somebody who does. What would have been left of the sentence after losing the last three words, in Latin?
    See you on Tuesday, at the signing!

    @Caesar: Yes, this is the correct place to enter. Sorry that you didn’t win, but it was good to meet you yesterday, albeit briefly. As I mentioned, I have no idea what the Latin for that phrase would have been. Sad, I know! Cheers.
