Since late January, I have been walking three times a week. It started off at about 4 miles each time, but I have been building up one of those more and more. Yesterday, I did about 8/9 miles. I got lost, so have no idea how far it was! I started off wearing normal hiking clothes, carrying only my shield on my back but as my kit arrived, I began to wear it too. Each time now, I go out wearing the lot – all to get a real feel for the kit, and also to identify any problems that might arise. The only thing that I haven’t worn is the shield, and that’s because I have a niggling shoulder injury that I need to get better.
I do get some looks from passersby and drivers, however! “Oi, mate, where are the rest of the 300?” from a van driver. “Coming in for a drink?” from a blonde outside the local pub. “Just a normal resident of Cccc (village),” from a passerby to another. It’s all in a good cause, however, and so far we’ve raised more than £7600 – and that’s with a month to go! If you haven’t already given, please think of doing so. You can donate from anywhere in the world, using Paypal. Please ignore the click boxes about being a “UK taxpayer” and go on until the Paypal page comes up. Donate here. Thanks!

Hi Ben, I’ve just found your web site and blog to my great delight. I love all kinds of historical fiction and in particular anything to do with Roman history. You’re the best! I bought your first book and was blown away by it. I have them all now except your latest. That will join the others on my book shelf on my next payday. Years ago my favourite author for books on Roman Britain was Rosemary Sutcliffe. Now it is you. The very best of luck with the walk

@korculablue/Leila: Thanks for posting, and welcome to my site! It’s a huge compliment even to be mentioned in the same breath as Rosemary Sutcliff, so thank you – I’m honoured. The walk’s done and dusted – I need to post about it here – but you can see loads of photos at facebook.com/benkanebooks
Best wishes
Ben
PS You like Croatia, I take it? 😉

@lee bridson: Hi Lee, and welcome to my site! I’m delighted that you like Spartacus: Rebellion. It was frustrating writing both books about him, considering the lack of information – but it did grant me a lot of freedom…!
